In today’s day and age, it is really saddening to know that war crimes have not stopped. It is common knowledge that various small wars are taking place and have been taking place all over the world for centuries now but in today’s world, technology has advanced to a level that was not conceivable before. This means that merely saying that we weren’t aware where the missile would hit, for instance, is nothing more than a lame excuse. In keeping with the latest in war crimes, we bring to you a list of top ten war crimes this world has seen and trust us; the list does not do justice to the atrocities that have been committed!
10. Malaysian Airlines Flight 17
The first case that we have to report on our list of war crimes is the very recent and we know that you all might have known from the title that it is related to the shoot down of the Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. It appears that this year is really bad luck for Malaysian Airlines in general because first there was the disappearing flight and now we have another Malaysian flight that was shot down by a lethal missile that escaped a war. Blames have been thrown around and although a culprit has not yet been targeted this much is pretty sure that this is one of those war crimes that cannot be forgiven because it is mere stupidity to say that they weren’t able to distinguish between a civilian aircraft and a military one! This incident happened on the 19th of July and has left several people sad and families devastated.
9. Operation Teardrop Torture- War Crime from World War II
Next on our list of war crimes takes you back to World War II when American and Canada both sent after a fleet of German Boats who apparently had flying bombs. Apparently what happened was that the US received some intelligence regarding this German fleet and to overcome the threat, a submarine and aircraft team was sent out to meet with them. This resulted in five German submarines sinking to destruction and two being captured. The act that really comprised of a brutal war crime was the treatment of those captured and later interrogated. It was so inhuman that one of the captives committed suicide! The rest we leave for you to decide.
8. The Syrian War – The Maan Massacre 2014
The next case rather cases on our list of war crimes that we have to report are related to the Syrian War and these crimes are very recent in comparison to what we previously mentioned from World War II. This happened on the 9th of February, 2014 when a group of Jund al-Aqsa captured a village in the Hama province and killed almost 21 civilians (you know how the total number is always amiss in these cases). What was even more heart breaking was the fact that 10 of these civilians belonged to one single family. It was later disclosed by the Syrian government that a total of 60 civilians while rebels took over the village in Hama called Maan.
7. War Crimes in the Iraq War – 2003 to 2011
Next we have to report a war crime case which was just as saddening as the rest of the war crimes on this list. This one is related to the Iraq war that continued from 2003 to 2011. We are particularly talking about the al-Askari Mosque bombing by terrorist group Al-Qaeda. The dead body count on the first day of the bombing reached an alarming 1000 and the place of literally filled with hundreds of dead bodies the next day.
6. The Congo Civil War – 2003
The next case that we have to report on our list of war crimes is related to the Congo Civil War that took place in 2003. We know from history that the pygmies were more of a target animal in that war than anything else, like maybe human! Their representative appealed to the human side of the UN’s Indigenous People’s Forum that the pygmies were being hunted and not only that, they were being eaten alive as if they were game. He called it genocide and cannibalism and requested the UN Security Council to recognize it.
