When a world cup is going on, you can expect several different shocking, unique, astonishing, weird and touching moments to take place. But when it is the football world cup that we are talking about, there is not end to the kind of drama and entertainment that you can expect while a match is about to take place. It can range anywhere from emotional and overly sentimental fans, an act of kindness, people biting one another (literally as the recent state of affairs proves), people crying, people spitting, players sending the ball into their own goals and various versions of karate while the game goes on! For all of you who have absolutely no interest in football, we bring this article of ten unusual moments in Fifa World Cup that will make you see the lighter more emotional and humane side of the game!
10. Soccer Player helps a boy on crutches
The first incident that we have to report on this list of ten unusual Fifa World Cup moments we have an Australian player who goes by the name of Mark Bresciano who captured the attention of the world (and admiration) as he bent down to tie the shoes laces of a little boy on crutches. This touching incident took places moments before Australia were to play Chile in a Fifa World Cup match from this year 2014. The news made small waves but the accompanying heart warming picture was enough to astound the world.
9. The Bite Heard Around the World
Now this next incident that we have to report on our list of unusual moments in Fifa World Cup we have the “bite” that was heard around the world. This is exactly how the moment (hilarious to some and very intimidating to others) was portrayed across newspapers and TV channels. Most of the pictures show a very hurt looking (think puppy faced) Italian player Giorgio Chiellini showing off his shoulder where there are visible marks of a love bite from none other than Luis Suarez from Uruguay. This moment is another one from the world cup that is currently underway. We can totally understand if you feel like you don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
8. Spitting Competition from the year 1990
Like we said, when it is the world cup and all that energy channeling through the crowds as well as the players, you can expect anything to happen even players spitting at one another (which was an act of intimidation once). The same happened in the year 1990 when Germany was playing Holland. The match took place in Italy (Milan to be particular) and what happened was that west German player Rudi Voeller clashed with Holland’s Frank Rijkaard and just like that Rijkaard started spitting on Voeller. As the camera’s zoomed in on the activity and the whole world rolled around laughing, the players were sent of the field. More often than not people consider that to be one of those lighter and funnier moments from world cup history.
7. Karate Kicks
The next moment that we have to report on our list of unusual moments in Fifa World Cup we have players who would rather practice some karate kicks instead of playing regular soccer. No we do understand that tackling someone requires quite a quick response and tactics but here what happened was that Nigel of Netherlands tackled Xabi of Spain with a karate kick straight to his chest. This happened during the world cup 2010 in South Africa. You can google moments from the same match and laugh over how hilarious the slow motion camera’s made it look (more like a judo match for sure).
6. Scotland’s Song of Victory
We have another funny rather ironic moment coming up on our list of unusual Fifa World Cup moments. What happened was that in the 1978 world cup, Scotland, which was no doubt a team comprised of an amazing squad of players, sang a song about winning the competition. Now if they had sung this song after winning at least one match, it might have made some sense but to think that they sung it before the world cup even began like before the first ball was even kicked. Irony and karma would have it, they lost the competition. What a shocker!
5. Labrador Retriever celebrates goal at FIFA World Cup 2014
This next incident which is touching, funny, unusual and everything else was witnessed during the match between Portugal and the USA. A cute little Labrador retriever called Severa was captured by the camera’s enthusiastically wagging her tail as Portugal scored the last minute goal against the US. What made it even funnier was that the dog showed the same reaction when Portugal was thrown out of the competition.
4. Headbutt – Zinedine Zidane
The next moment that we have on our list is from the 2006 World Cup in Berlin Germany when French player Zinedine Zidane gave Marco Matterazzi, an Italian player, something that became known hilariously has the headbutt. You can watch replays over the internet to get a better idea but this again was a very different way of either intimidation or tackling. Very original we must say as the world laughs on.
3. John Aldridge and the hissy fit
Now we can totally understand that sometimes the game just gets so tough and gets to you like anything so there is absolutely no issue if some of the players sometime throw a hissy fit bordering on insanity. The same happened with John Aldridge when he totally lost it in the World Cup 1994 and his whole career is highlighted by it as well.
2. Jeff Agoos scores his own goal
Well how about that, a person who scores a goal for the opposing team. Jeff Agoos experienced one of the most ironic moments of his life when, after waiting 14 years to be part of the US team in the world cup, he smashed a goal into his own net. We bet he must be thinking whether all the years of wait was for this stupid purpose. Never the less, it gave the football fans quite a lot of joy amidst the tension of the game.
1. Diana Ross and her penalty kick in 1994
The last moment that we have to report on our list of unusual Fifa World Cup moments is the penalty kick that Diana Ross was supposed to put away in the opening ceremony of the 1994 World Cup. She kicked the ball which was completely wide off the net but never the less the goal split open. It was one hilarious moment but gave a great light start to the world cup.
