Whenever someone utters the word New York, the first thing that comes to mind is FRIENDS. FRIENDS the TV show that is still one of the most popular TV shows despite having ended nearly a decade ago. The show FRIENDS was actually shot on a set in Los Angeles but they showedit as if it all took place in New York City which in itself is one of the reasons that people should visit New York. But here in this article, we are trying to point out the places in New York that tourists generally seem to miss. Why New York you might ask! Well because New York is the city to be in. It is hip and happening and for tourists, there is so much to do that you will feel the city will eat you alive. But here are ten places that you really must see if you are in New York for just a day.
10. Central Park New York
The very first location which should not be ignored simply because it is a park is the famous Central Park. This park spans an area of around 840 acres and was designed by Calvert Vaux and Fredrick Law Olmsted. To have two options: you can either rent a bike for yourself and take a ride through the park early in the morning when the crowd hasn’t started to show up or you can take the guided tour that starts at nine every morning, also on a bike. Bow Bridge is the most photographed place in the whole park. The park also offers live strumming of a guitar and various local specialties in food like pumpkin waffles.
9. Film Forum
The next must see spot if you are in New York for a day is the film forum. This is a must see place for all cine fans and you will find something of your choice in there. All of the movies that you otherwise read about in New York Times can be seen here ranging from something of a Woody Allen touch, artsy movies and otherwise audacious fun. If you happen around the concession stand, get yourself a lemon poppy sponge cake and you will thank us later.
8. The Empire State Building
This next monument is not to be missed at all. The empire state building is one of those spots where tourists are gathered like herds and some insane person out of the crowds will surely go “moooo!” Being one of the tallest standing structures, the view from the 86th floor is breath staking. It can literally take your breath away. You can buy a ticket to avoid the crowds and if you can really afford it than it’s worth the money to go up to the intimate 102nd floor observation deck.
7. Grimaldi’s Pizzeria
There are a lot of pizza places in New York that fight the battle for the best pizza in town but since you are in New York for just one day you will have to take your pick and quick. No one can ever go wrong with Grimaldi’s for several reason: first off, it is under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge from where you can see the really picturesque parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, secondly, it also has a jukebox that is playing the most wonderful sounds like Frank Sinatra, thirdly, Frank Sinatra is rumored to have had Grimald’s pies flown in to Vegas to devour and you will get those at Grimald’s while you enjoy the sights and sounds! Can you ask for more?
6. West Village Stroll
The neighborhood hasn’t really changed from the 19th century and you will find, as you stroll aimlessly (do not head for a particular destination – taking an aimless stroll is the point) that the tree lined cobblestone streets will draw you in. Head along west and you shall find the famous Spotted Pig, a crowded bar where a cold ale will just be the right drink!
5. Little Branch
If you are looking for a cozy little nook to settle into and get to know someone a little better then Little Branch is the place for you. What you can do is head along in and ask one of the bartenders clad in suspenders to mix you a hearty little cocktail. They pour it over ice that has been chipped from the ice blocks themselves. Before you know it, you find yourself falling head over heels for the bar!
4. MoMA and P.S1
While MoMA is the art center for all the modern pieces of art, P.S1, a cutting edge little art center which is house in public school will really appeal to your senses. The specialty in the summer is the architectural garden which appears to be ever changing and also, Saturday nights see a free dance party which is a must if your day includes the night as well!
3. Bergdorf Goodman
Initially it was Barney’s that we heard of as the main departmental store and the prices were reasonable affordable. But since then, Barney’s has turned itself into a small chain and is not just located in New York. So Bergdorf Goodman is the new just-in-New York departmental store and it is also slightly pricey. Even if you cannot afford all of the stuff in there, it is a good enough place for a lot of window shopping.
2. Bowery Ballroom
If you are a fan of music and music is a part of your soul then you must visit the Bowery Ballroom. It houses the best music system in town and is the place to be for all music lovers no matter what genre you might be interested in.
1. Grand Central Terminal
This particular place has been mentioned in several hit TV series and has also been pictured in various super hit movies. The grand central terminal, whom some people call the grand central station, is one of the best sights to see. Not only the architecture, which takes you to a bygone era, but the oyster bar downstairs or the whispering gallery where you can tell your secrets to a total stranger. Visit that place even if you have nowhere to go and you can literally spend hours in the depot alone without an ounce of boredom.
