We have always admired the US as a free country and what not, we have been thinking that theirs is the happiest nation and that nothing
can ever go wrong in the administration over there but this article will throw light on several incidences which are proof to the fact that the FBI is reigning uncontrolled in the US. Whenever the US government is on the brink of electing the new leader of the FBI they should also factor in the situation that the FBI is actually ripping people off of their privacy under the façade of fighting terrorism. This fact will be highlighted further as the article throws light on some of the most shocking liberties that the FBI has taken.
10. Exploiting the Patriot Act
There are numerous examples of the fact that the FBI has exploited to the extent of misuse as far as the Patriot Act and its sanctity is concerned. The FBI has used the “business provisions” clause and under its umbrella it has tracked each and every phone call my by the US citizen. This in itself is a huge breech of privacy and then we say that the American people are free. FBI has also been blamed with excess and misuse of the term “exigent letters” whereby they declare a false emergency that then entitles them to extract private information.
9. Amendments in the FBI Rulebook
Before the Bush government was on its way out, the Attorney General made sure that certain amendments were made to the rulebook of the FBI. These certain amendments gave the FBI a complete right of passage into other people’s lives. What this means is that the FBI no longer had to have any factual ground before it could made an ‘assessment’ or in other words a strictly intrusive investigation. Under these amendments the FBI opened 82,000 separate investigations within the years 2009-2011.
8. Racial and Ethnic Mapping
Under the guidelines from the Attorney General, the FBI also started to map all of the American communities based on their mix of ethnicity and then they further mapped the possibility of the crimes each ethnic group can commit which was obviously based on stereotypes. In simple words, they are simply profiling and categorizing the entire population based on religion and depicts a very racist frame of action.
7. Excessive Data Collection and Data Mining
The FBI has automatically taken the right to collect volumes of data that comes under the ambit of private data to which no government or legal authority should have access to without the permission of the person involved. The FBI has to date collected 20 different records for each person whether man, woman or child. There was a time when the congress wanted information about these programs for which a staff of 360 people were hired but the FBI refused to give access to any part of the information it collected.
6. The Exemption from the Whistle-blower Act
The next shocking revelation that you are now coming across in this list is the fact the FBI is also exempt from the Whistleblower Act. This means that countless employees of the FBI who are non-supervisory positions within the FBI will not and do not report any misconduct or wrong doings that they come across while on job!
5. Targeting Journalists
FBI is way out of its own jurisdiction when it comes to targeting journalists. What happens is that since FBI is tapping phone records of almost every individual on the continent and it is more than normally zealous when it comes to the pursuit of whistle blowers that some journalists get trampled on in the process. Only recently the FBI apprehended a few very well known journalists from prominent news agencies simply because they were tapping phones using the exigent letters (unlawfully) and found them guilty of aiding and abetting crime. It is such a load of horse poop.
4. Refusing to relay information
Time and again, the FBI has been guilty of not co-operating with the congress as far as relaying information is concerned. Due to its over zealous attempts at collecting all available information whether through lawful or unlawful sources, the FBI has more information regarding stuff than the government. But whenever the FBI was asked for the information they either gave misleading information or refused to give the information altogether thus thwarting the congressional oversight.
3. Targeting the Freedom of Information Act
A lot of people especially those belonging to the American Muslim Community, people in the domestic advocacy groups and those who are a part of community outreach programs come under the umbrella of the Freedom of Information Act. However, several reports have emerged which indicate that the FBI has gathered information from such programs secretly so as to build up their data base about law abiding citizen. Now we can be understanding to the point that they are doing this for the betterment of the country and to some extent, it is about targeting terrorism but this is crossing far too many lines.
2. Proxy Detentions
The FBI is well aware that all of its actions are answerable within the country so what it does is that it requests the governments from other countries to interfere. And how do they interfere you might ask! Well they arrest some people, interrogate them and sometimes also torture them without any solid foundation. This serves the purpose and the FBI can then interview them with anyone being the wiser.
1. Use of the No Fly List
Here is another clever technique that is employed by the FBI and obviously is not allowed to them legally. What they do is that they put people on the no fly list. These people are completely unaware and only find out when they are hoping to return back to the US. For this they contact the embassy in a state of troubling vulnerability. The FBI then pounces and offers to take their names off the no fly list if they are willing in return to become secret informants. How totally screwed up is that.
