The whole world is continuously at logger heads due nuclear weapons and nuclear technology and what not. Those who have bigger bombs apparently think that they are more powerful and why, because they have more of a capacity to turn a huge city into nothing but ashes. Amazing isn’t it! It got us thinking, what would happen if we were to decide that nuclear technology, nuclear weapons and anything nuclear would only be used for peaceful purposes? Meaning thereby that the thousands of war heads can be used for something other than bombing places and killing people. You might be asking, what other use and that is exactly what this article sheds light on; ten ideas that outlay peaceful uses of nuclear technology. While most of them may seem way over board please do take a moment to notice that it is the positive thought behind the idea that counts.
10. Creating a Harbor, or Just a Hole
The first amazing idea on our list of peaceful uses of nuclear technology is to use the bombs, the warheads or whatever form of nuclear explosives you have, to create a huge hole in the ground. Nuclear weapons have proven their capacity for doing so and as far as holes are concerned, the best possible option is the use of nuclear technology. Not only will it save so much man power and days of labor, it would also be more efficient. The holes can be used for mining whether for petroleum or minerals or coal (aka natural resources), it can be helpful in easily creating a reservoir or, as most of the scientists pointed out, it can be a great idea for a new canal. Genius we say!
9. Creating a New Panama Canal
While we are still afloat the topic of creating a new canal using a nuclear explosion, we would take this opportunity to mention that a new Panama Canal would perhaps be the best demonstration of the capabilities of a nuclear warhead. The 20th century has laughed at the Panama Canal as it is primarily due to its very small size which hinders the ability to use super tankers or other jumbo sized machinery. So much so that we have it on record when John F. Kennedy recommended bombing the place to make way.
8. Natural Gas Exploration
The next peaceful use of nuclear technology on our list is the exploration for natural gas. We are all (well some of us) aware that natural gas is more often than not, trapped within rocks and the use of bombs and nuclear technology can actually help the rocks to become more permeable. A similar experiment has been conducted in the 1960s where rocks were categorically targeted via nuclear explosions so that the gas trapped inside could be released. These experiments were very successful and therefore can safely be used now especially when we have more nuclear power and more need for natural gas as a resource.
7. Mining Oil Shale
We know that the future would demand more sources of energy and they better be alternate sources because the natural ones wont last forever. We can use thermonuclear explosions to turn oil shade into liquid fuel and bingo! Need we say more.
6. Disposing of Nuclear Waste
Next on our list of peaceful uses of nuclear technology is a blasting idea (no pun intended of course). Nuclear explosions can be used to take of nuclear waste itself. What we can do is make a huge cavity with a nuclear explosion and then dump all the nuclear waster into it. As luck would have it, the waste would heat up, boil, dry up and then melt thus forming a rocky ball like structure. The idea was put forth in the year 1973 and it looked quite attractive and cost efficient.
5. Human Spaceflight
If you guys have seen the movie gravity then you will be aware of where we are coming from. What happened in that movie was that Sandra Bullock (one of the lead roles in the movies) wanted to land her space ship and she used the landing thrusts to propel the space ship into motion. We can do the same with out space flights! What with so many warheads lying idle, why not to attach some to the base of the shuttle and shoot ourselves to the moon, like literally! This was actually proposed before we mentioned it here, by one Freeman Dyson and it was called Project Orion if you would like to look into it. If we can’t use them on Earth, we might still be able to use them to get to outer space.
4. Defending Earth From an Asteroid
This next proposition towards peaceful uses of nuclear technology has already been demonstrated in the movies and massively at that. If, God forbid, the world is coming to end due to the fact that a huge asteroid is headed our way then maybe we can take a huge leap and hit it with a bomb. It might not be a sure shot way but it is something that can be done if the need arises.
3. As a peace offering to end wars
Now this next proposition might sound a little out there but it is in fact a great idea if you think about it. We need to first establish this world wide treaty that no country would use a nuclear weapon like ever! If the treaty does not necessarily work out and countries are at war then there can be no better a peace offering than a nuclear war head. The opponent would feel less threatened and world order would be reinstated. This will also result in a lot of positive energy and also prove to be a grand gesture.
2. To developing nations for morale boosting
The next idea on our list of peaceful uses of nuclear bombs involves a concept known as the concept of a gift economy. Now for those who are not totally aware of the concept, it basically entails that the cycle of supply and demand should work on a gift system. So if the developed nations have something that the developing nations would really like, then the developed ones would gift it to boost the morale of the under developed and developing nations. Imagine a world where big nuclear nations get into a habit of giving out nuclear technology in charity to smaller non-nuclear countries and then imagine the level of peacefulness that would thus prevail.
1. To hit the moon and test the aliens
Last but certainly not the least, we come to yet another over the top, a little out there and for some, a completely preposterous proposition. What we can do is use nuclear technology and hit the moon or better yet, Mars. The sole purpose of this would be (apart from the joke that says we can nuke the moon to show power) to alert the aliens (if any) to our presence, to settle the issue once and for all that whether another species exists on one of the planets in our solar system or not. How amazing would that be? We bet the loudness of the explosion will pressurize them into showing themselves eh?
