The year 2014 has been amazing with respect to almost all aspects that we live and die for. To get it off of our chest, we do have a sad feeling in our hearts for all those fatal incidents that took place but at the same time, there has been so much advancement in so many different fields that one just ends up thinking, that maybe this is what the circle of life is. We lost some lives and on the other hand, gained the ability to save a million more. The year 2014 has made us stronger as a universe than we were a couple decades ago and that is saying something. You guys name a field and we will tell you where, how and when we have moved forward in it. We will tell you where, when and how, we have left behind our shortcomings and moved on to things bigger and better. Now as we are on the verge of leaving this world behind, we bring to you a bird’s eye view of what this year was all about, all the major events, breakthroughs, advancements and inventions.
1. The Bad- Sports
We are going to start off with the sports section as we dive into our highlight for 2014. So when we get to the question of sports fared in this year that is almost at its end, one statement does true justice to it and that statement is that sporting events and matches to which the world was really looking forward too, were really quite a disappointment. We had the Super Bowl XLVII with Seattle 43 and Denver 8, we had the NCAA Women’s basketball final, we had the Men’s US Open where Martin Kaymer won by 8 strokes, we had the British open where Mcllroy won by two strokes and we had the Winter Olympics amongst many other sporting events this year. The Winter Olympics should have stolen the spot light but sadly, all we have to report is the was broken down doors in the Olympic village, the figure-skating almost controversy and the missing Olympic ring and that too during the opening ceremony. All we truly got out of the event was the new song and that is about it.
2. The Little Elephant- Round Eared Sengi
As far as highlights for 2014 go, we have a new species of elephant that was discovered in this year along with so many other things that we are reporting. The new tiny elephant shrew is also known as round-eared sengi. The tiny little thing has been discovered in the ancient volcanic region of Africa, near the Namib Desert. The best thing is that this little elephant also has a tiny little trunk.
3. The Good- Sports
When we come to what was good about sports in this year we are getting ready to say goodbye too, we have to report the World Cup Final in which, to most people’s astonishment, Germany beat Argentina by 1-0. The historical moment was perhaps the semifinal between Argentina and Germany where, as you might remember gladly, Germany leveled Argentina by 7-1. Another good news about sports was perhaps the Wimbledon Men’s Final which was delightful for all tennis fans around the world.
4. Polar Vortex in North America
Next up we come to the natural disasters that struck this world in the year 2014 as we pray that remaining few days and years to come are relatively blessed for this universe. Polar Vortex in North America started off at the end of the previous year actually and continued on till April this year. The resultant harsh weather consisting of heavy snowfall and strong cold winds caused more than 240 million people in the US and Canada to be affected. Schools and universities were shut down and a gazillion flights were cancelled.
5. The Sony Pictures Entertainment Hacks
There was another interesting news story/event that popped up towards the end of the year giving us the opportunity of adding it to our list of highlights for 2014. So what happened was that on the 24th of November, 2014, a hacker group that goes by the name of Guardians of Peace, hacked into the personal identifiable information of Sony employees, the emails that they exchanged amongst themselves and all, and the same was leaked. Fingers were raised towards the Korean governments but not substantial information was available.
6. Avalanche on Mount Everest
The sad incident happened on the 18th of April, 2014 and went pretty hand in hand with the Polar Vortex. The avalanche killed 16 people near the base camp who were later determined to be Nepalese Guides. 13 out of the 16 bodies were recovered and search for the remaining was cancelled due to height of difficulty and risk to the life of the rescuers.
7. Israel Attacks on Gaza Strip
Another one of the most saddening and fatality prone event for year 2014 were the attacks on Gaza by Israel. This year on the 8th of July, 2014, Israel launched a military operation in the Hamas ruled Gaza strip. The bombardment continued for seven weeks and included ground attacks and rockets resulting in the death of nearly 2,200 people.
8. Ludian Earthquake
Next up we have the sad incident of the Ludian Earthquake that took nearly 600 lives. This disaster occurred on the 3rd of August when an earthquake of 6.1 magnitude hit the Ludian county in China. 2,400 people were injured, 12,000 houses were leveled to the ground, 30,000 houses were completely damaged and nearly 230,000 people suffered due to lack of water and food resulting in even more casualties.
