Curiosity is the basic human instinct; it is a strong drive that triggers a will to find out more through research and study. Throughout human history, it is observed that humans have always been very passionate about learning new things and improving the state of their understanding and knowledge. However, history has also proved that men can be very selfish in achieving their goals and satisfying their urge to find out more. In this write-up, we bring to you a list of ten worst experiments on humans. These experiments were a part of various research studies and were conducted on humans without any sense of sensitivity toward them. They were treated like lab rats, or even worse, in some cases. Let’s read through it!!!
10. Sigmund Freud and the case of Emma Eckstein
You all must have heard of the great psychologist, Sigmund Freud, who is widely appreciated and acknowledged for his contribution to modern psychology. Eckstein came to him for help with her nervous illness. She was diagnosed with hysteria and excessive masturbation. Freud’s friend, Willhelm Fleis, who was a doctor, believed that her condition could be cured by cauterizing the nose. Thus, he applied a surgical procedure on her, in which her nasal passages were burned. Moreover, he also left surgical gauze in her nasal passage. She was disfigured for the rest of her life. She is not the only example of a case like that. Similar experiments were conducted on many other patients. This is a wicked example of experiments conducted on humans and therefore is included in our list of ten worst experiments on humans.
9. Mind Control, Child Abuse – Project MKULTRA, Subproject 68
The next experiment on our list of ten worst experiments on humans was run by CIA and named as Project MKULTRA. The research was based on mind-altering substances. The researchers were interested in finding out the methods that can influence and control the mind and extract details and information from resisting minds. To achieve their purpose, doctors chose their subjects from amongst the patients admitted in the Allen Memorial Institute. The patients were suffering from conditions like bi-polar or anxiety disorders. The research, conducted in the name of therapy, on these patients was life-turning for them. The experiment was conducted by administering electroconvulsive therapy on the patients and putting them in a state of coma for months by the use of drugs. They then played to them playback tapes of statements and noises, over and again. The worst outcome was the fact that the patients suffered amnesia at the hands of this experiment. They even forgot how to talk and could never restore their memories; they had even forgotten everything about their families.
8. The David Reimer Case
The David Reimer Case is the next to make it to our list of ten worst human experiments. It was conducted for research in the field of psychology and to date is known as one of the most inhumane researches conducted on humans. In this a little boy, David reamer, was given a sex change when he was a little boy. The idea was to have him lead a normal life even after the sex change. He was kept surrounded by girlish stimuli. However, it so happened that David did not stop acting like a stereotypical boy. It was then when he first found out the truth about his being a subject of an experiment. Although, he took a decision to undergo a reverse sex change but he could not adjust to the fluctuating roles he was made to play during his childhood and adolescence and therefore tragically committed suicide at the age of 38.
7. Operation Midnight Climax
Operation Midnight Climax, a manipulative experiment conducted on humans, is the next entry on our list of ten worst experiments on humans. The basic purpose of the study was to see the effects of the LSD drug. LSD stands for Lysergic Acid Diethylamide; it is a hallucinogenic drug, which induces hallucination. Conducted under the headship of CIA, special safe houses were made in New York and San Francisco to facilitate the experimentation. These safe houses were actually staged to be brothels. The subjects of the experiment were lured by prostitutes, who were on the payroll of CIA. So, instead of doing with them what they hoped them to do, they would dose them with drugs, especially LSD and even marijuana. It is rather sickening to know that the experiments were monitored through two-way mirrors. The worst part of the experiment was dosing non-consenting adults with drugs they did not know could affect them in a variety of negative way.
6. The Monster Study
The Monster Study, which began in 1939, involved experimentation on children. It was a very cruel act, indeed. The experiment was conducted by Wendell Johnson and Mary Tudor from the University of Iowa. The subjects were 22 non-stuttering orphan children, who were examined with stuttering experiments. For this purpose, they divided the children into two groups. One group was under observance to study the effects of positive speech therapy; they were praised for their fluent speech. While the other group, the ill-fated one, was being examined on the effects of negative therapy. They were labeled as stutters and were harshly censured for any flaws in their speech abilities. The children in the latter group, as a result of negative feedback and criticism, became psychologically affected for a lifetime. Some even developed speech problems that they could never recover. Some, when they became adults, sued the University. This surely deserves to be on our list of ten worst experiments on humans.
