So what do you guys really know about Switzerland eh? That it is the most romantic country in the world, that it is where the Swiss banks are (duh!) and therefore all the money in the world, that it is where the best chocolate is (lets just stop right here shall we, pit stop?)? Well ladies and gentlemen, today in our did-you-know segment, we bring to you some really interesting facts about the country that you have all come to love so much! Presenting ten things to know about Switzerland, apart from the Swiss alps and all. Cheers!
Let us start of with the basic information about Switzerland on our list of things to know about Switzerland. For instance, did you guys know that the country has a population of about 8 million. About 5 million of them live in the Swiss Plateau in between the Jura Mountains and the Swiss Alps. All the larger Swiss cities lie on the plateau, including the city of Zurich, which is Switzerland’s largest with a population of 376,990. The canton (federal state) of Zurich is the most densely populated canton in Switzerland, with 1,242,000 inhabitants in total.
9. National Language
The next fact that we have to report on our list of things to know about Switzerland has everything to do with the national language of the country. Now we all know that every financially heavy set person has to have an account in Swiss banks right? We also know that the financially heavy set can belong to any nation in the world! Well that is our explanation for why Switzerland has has four national languages including French, German, Italian and Rhaeto-Romantsch. The latter has Latin roots. You would have to be pretty well read in order to simply be well versed in the national languages if you are but a Swiss national eh?
8. An International Research Centre
Next up on our list of facts regarding Switzerland is about the knowledge that the country is widely recognized as an international research centre. The private and public sector of the country are both working as well as strongly promoting science and technology. It is this reason that the Swiss economy is on highly skilled workers in specialist areas. We are talking about areas that include but are not limited to microtechnology, hi-tech, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, as well as banking and insurance. Imagine the level of education that they might be receiving and also, imagine if they are able in all of these subjects and in all of the languages!
7. Renewable Energy
Since the time we started doing this segment “did-you-know”, which related to various interesting facts about countries all over the globe, we have mentioned more than a few time about countries that we believe are green. This means that they are big on extracting energy from renewable resources rather than consuming the natural ones all at once. The same goes without saying for Switzerland. Next on our list of things to know about Switzerland is that more than half of Swiss domestic electricity is produced by 556 hydroelectric power plants – some 19 million gigawatt hours a year. Hydropower is the country’s most important renewable energy.
6. Least Corrupt Country in the World
Next on our list of things to know about Switzerland is perhaps the thing that we are already all aware off but we are still mentioning it here for motivational purposes. Switzerland is one of those countries that are corruption free! That is a huge thing in today’s world where corruption exists at all levels. On a lighter note, with a country that is so green and whose factories churn out tons of chocolate every day, what else do you expect?
