In the spirit of continuing our trend of bringing you interesting lists regarding interesting facts about interesting places (pun intended), we take you to the Netherlands today. We all know that most people refer to the Netherlands as Holland and some people also think that perhaps Holland was the name of Netherlands originally but that is not correct. The fact is that Netherlands and Holland are not synonyms as Holland is the west coastal region of the Netherlands and not the entire Netherlands itself. Holland actually comprises of just Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Leiden and the Hague! 10. Bacon Capital of the World
The first and the foremost fact that we have to report on our list of things to know about Netherlands is regarding Bacon. Now we are sure that all you guys are paying attention at the mention of Bacon and seeing as you are all such big fans of the eatable, did you know that 70% of the bacon in the world is provided by the Netherlands alone? We bet you didn’t know that and we would be assuming that all of you would want to rush to the Netherlands for the bacon if nothing else.
9. The Dutch are the Tallest
Next up on our list of things to know about Netherlands is the fact that the Dutch, people from the Netherlands are known as the Dutch, are the tallest people in the world. Now you all must be wondering why that is so and it is so because of the DNA, the nutritious diet which contains good proportions of dairy and their overall welfare and wellbeing. The average height for a male is 184 cm and that for a female is 170 cm which makes a height roughly 6 foot 1 inch and 5 foot 5 inches for man and woman respectively.
8. The Narrow Staircases
Most of the Netherlands and especially Holland is known for the narrow staircases that they have. It has transpired that the stair cases are so narrow that if people want to shift from one place to another, their furniture cannot be carried down the stairs. Can you imagine the discomfort when the furniture needs to hauled down along the roof with a rope and other reinforcements?
7. Parks and Street Benches
Next up on our list of things to know about Netherlands is the fact that there is a large amount of parks and street benches in the Netherlands and this has everything to do with how the Dutch prioritize their wellbeing over everything else. Like we mentioned earlier, one of the reasons for the Dutch being so tall is their wellbeing and health. They make sure that they aren’t sitting at their work benches from morning till dusk and do take the time out to relax and just chill and thus the plethora of benches.
6. Family Traditions
As is with most of the west, the children in the Netherlands generally move out of their family homes when they reach the age of 18 and do not wait to get married or setup an individual family unit before moving out of their parents’ home. The moving out ceremony is generally perceived to be a mark of independence on part of the children.
5. Concepts of Interior Décor
Next up on our list of things to know about Netherlands is the Dutch style and sense regarding interior decoration. Did you guys know that most of the Dutch houses have very high ceilings and they prefer room lamps rather than ceiling lights? Their reason for such a concept of interior décor is that it makes the room or the house look more comfy and cozy. Now if you take a closer look at places where the décor inspires and attracts you, you will realize that places lit up with lamps have a more comfortable ambiance rather than places with large chandeliers.

Next up on our list of things to know about Netherlands is the Schiphol Airport. Now this might be the first time you are hearing about it but the Schiphol Airport is actually situated 4.5 meters below sea level. Go figure!
3. Grave Leasing
Next up on our list of things to know about Netherlands is a fact that will come as a shock out of all the list of interesting as well as shocking facts on this list. The thing is that since there is a shortage of space in the country, graves are given out on a lease for ten, fifteen or twenty years. There is a grey area where the details of what happens after the lease period is over, are concerned. Well, Netherlands is certainly one creepy place to have a family cemetery.
2. The Dutch and Cheese
A lot of countries can claim that cheese is their claim to fame but did you guys know that the Dutch have been making cheese since 400 A.D. Man would they have discovered a gazillion types of cheese and man oh man would they know what it should taste like (in real – they so do.).
Last but not the least, on our list of things to know about Netherlands, we come to their almost-official foot wear informally known as clogs and formally known as Klompen. Did you guys know that the wooden clogs have been the famous foot wear of the Dutch for 700 years? They use it while dancing as well and if you guys remember – they were show cased in a cartoon series as well. We have sort of fallen in love with them now especially considering how artisans, farmers, fishermen, factory workers and so many other people wear Klompen in the Netherlands to protect their feat!
