What do you guys know about Australia? Apart from the fact that it is a beautiful country with even more beautiful cities, gazillions of opportunities for further studies and what not? Well we will be taking the pleasure to introduce you to a list of interesting facts, things to know about Australia. It won’t be facts like Melbourne is known for excellent education prospects and has one of the best law schools in the world. It will be information like before being called Melbourne, what was the name if the city and trust us, as you continue to read, you will find out that it was nothing docile. We decided that the first information on our list of things to know about Australia should be the basic statistics regarding the amazing country. So did you guys know that it is the 6th largest country in the world, occupying an entire continent of some 7.6 million square kilometres and did you also know that it has the world’s 3rd largest ocean territory, spanning three oceans and covering around 12 million square kilometres? The vegetation covers nearly 7 million square kilometers or 91 percent of Australia which we believe to be pretty impressive! While we are still on the same page we should also inform you that the largest Greek population in the world beside Athens in Greece can be found in Melbourne Victoria.
9. Disappearing President – 1967
Before you start to think that this particular fact maybe negative or rather depressing let us show you the glass half full side of it! We believe that no country in this world has had a history that can claim a president Harold Holt went for a swim and was never seen again. This happened on the 17th of December 1967 and the President was officially declared dead on the 19th of the same month due to continued disappearance.
8. The Pink Sea
Next up on our list of interesting things to know about Australia is the pink sea. Did you guys know that Australia has one of the most beautiful pink seas in the world? The color of the water is the most gorgeous pinkish coral shade and scientists has so far been unable to explain what causes this curious coloration since there are no mineral deposits anywhere near the place! Interesting eh? How about a sun bath right on the shore?
7. More Kangaroos than People
You might remember a similar fact about another one of the countries in our “did-you-know” series but that doesn’t mean you should not be aware of another similar fact regarding a totally different country right? So next on our list of things to know about Australia we have to tell you that the Kangaroo population in the country is more than the human population. Given how cute kangaroos are, this is a very interesting arrangement isn’t it? Also, if you would like to eat rather than see a kangaroo, their meat can be purchased from the supermarket, butcher and available on restaurant menus as a leaner and healthier alternative to beef or lamb with a 1-2 percent fat content.
6. Melbourne was previously called Batmania
So now we come to the fact that we threw a hint towards in the beginning of this article and that is regarding Melbourne. So tell us, did you guys figure out what the city was called before it became known as Melbourne? Well as weird as it may sound (because naming cities is supposed to be a mature thing to do0 Melbourne was previously known as Batmania! Talk about a fascination of super human fictional characters and before your mind starts to wander, no there was no batman in the city- a real one we mean!
5. The Never Never River
Next on our list of interesting things to know about Australia we have the Never Never River! Yes there actually exists a river in Australia that is known as the Never Never River from Never Never Land! People who have been to the river claim that it is a magical place filled with endless possibilities and you really get the feeling as if anything can happen. (anything, mind you!)
We next come to the national language of the country. Like America, Australia does not have an official national language and is basically known as an English speaking country. It might however entice you to know that more than 15% of the entire population speaks a language other than English. So the main thing on this next entry on our list of things to know about Australia is that apparently over 200 different languages and dialects are spoken in Australia including 45 Indigenous languages. The most common non-English spoken languages, the ones that more than 15% of the population are keen on speaking include but are not limited to Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese and Mandarin.
3. Largest Cattle Station
Now this might really catch you by surprise seeing as Kangaroo is largest in number in Australia as far as animals are concerned but also the largest cattle station in the world is Anna Creek Station in South Australia at over 34,000 square kilometres is the world’s largest cattle station. It is even larger than Belgium, if you really want to make a comparison.
2. One of the Most Obese Nations
Australia is a nation that loves sports right? Well as per a survey of 2012, Australia is the fourth most obese country in the world with a 25 percent obesity rate and the numbers do not appear to be on a decline.

Last but not the least on our list of things to know about Australia we have the Australia Day. The day is a celebration of diversity and tolerance in Australian society, embracing all ethnic backgrounds, racial differences and political viewpoints. This is another very interesting fact that might as well be part of your general knowledge because if it is one thing, Australia is very diverse!
