10. Polish-Lithuanian War : Shortest Wars Fought In History
Poland and Lithuania had not yet won their independence after the end of World War I when they went to war over territory which included the current Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. Poland had occupied the disputed territories in 1919 while the two countries were united against Soviet expansion, but came to odds in 1920 when the Soviets were driven back after the Battle of Warsaw. This war, popularly known as the Polish-Lithuanian War came to end just after 37 days of commencement. There were a few military confrontations and then through negotiations and talks on the table, a cease fire happened which gave birth to the independent territory of Poland. This 37-day war certainly deserves a spot on our list of ten shortest wars fought in history.
9. Israel vs Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq
This probably has to be the shortest war ever fought in the human history. It lasted for only 6 days and was fought between Israel and multiple states including Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq in 1967. The war began when Israel threatened Syria. Egypt, as a Syrian ally, prepared its soldiers and tanks to fight against Israel. On the 5th of June, attack against Egypt’s air force was launched by Israel. In response to this, Jordan attacked Western Jerusalem and Netanya. However, as a result of the war, Israel captured much of the territory, which proved to be useful for it in the 1973 Arab-Israel war, six years later.
8. Anglo-Zanzibar War
Anglo-Zanzibar War is another shortest war that was fought in the human history, and that is exactly why you find it here on our list of ten shortest wars fought in history. It was between the UK and Zanzibar in 1896. This was the shortest war which lasted for only 38 minutes. The conflict started with the death of Zanzibar’s sultan who was pro-British and with his death his successor took over who was known to be less Pro-Britain. The British Navy demanded the sultan to step down from the position by gathering a small fleet in the harbor near the palace of the sultan. When the sultan did not meet the demand, British force opened fire which lasted for 38 minutes. During this time, a small land force moved in and took over the palace of Sultan.
7. Georgian-Armenian War
Next we have Georgian Armenian War which was fought in 1918. This war makes it to our list of ten shortest wars fought in history because it was based on a short time period of only 24 days. The major outcome of the war was a mutual administration of the area under dispute. This 24-day border war was fought between the Democratic Republic of Georgia and the Democratic Republic of Armenia over disputed territories of Borchalo, Javakheti and Lori districts. The armed clashes between the two countries began on the 7th December, 1918 and cease fire agreement was signed on the 31st of the same month.
6. Greco-Turkish War
Commonly referred to as ‘the 30 Days War’, the Greco-Turkish War was fought between the Ottoman and Greek Empire in 1897. The war was a result of Greece’s motive to takeover Crete, which was under the Ottoman Empire. They wished to make it a part of Greece. The outcome of the war was Turkey’s victory, which was largely due to the support of Germans and a strong state’s army. This surely finds a place on our list of ten shortest wars fought in history .
