Until the early 1990s, there were murders and beating on daily basis. However, after the extreme violence of years, reforms were introduced. Now, it is the strictest prison in the world. There are frequent SWAT team crackdowns and cells are searched on daily basis. The changes have also resulted in lowering the number of stabbings from 1000 to 70 a year.
4. Tadmor Prison, Syria
Tadmor Prison in Syria is one of the most dangerous and notorious prisons in the world. It includes both political prisoners and other criminals. They are tortured to the most inhumane degree. The facility was closed in 2001 but unfortunately it reopened after a decade and this time with even more prisoners and absolutely no improvements whatsoever. The prison does not have any means of entertainment – mainly, books, TV or radio. The only thing that the prisoners have to face is the torture. 3. Gitarama Central Prison, Rwanda
The Gitarama Central Prison in Rwanda is one of the ten most notorious prisons in the world, which is why we have it on number 3 on our list of ten notorious and brutal prisons in the world. There is absolutely no funding available in favor of the prison, so the only thing to worry is not the beating and the torture. In this overcrowded, congested, and underfunded prison, prisoners die of starvation or due to poor medical conditions. Out of starvation, some prisoners have known to have indulged in cannibalism – they kill and eat other inmates for survival. The infrastructure is also poor – it was designed to accommodate 500 prisoners but it has more than 2000 presently. Prisoners sleep under the beds, on bare floor and in corridors.
2. Alcatraz Island Prison
Alcatraz Island Prison is the next on our list of ten most notorious and brutal prisons in the world. Located on Alcatraz Island off the coast of Sans Francisco, in California, this cruel prison has been shut down now. However, you can still see it on our list because it was famous for being a very brutal facility for the prisoners. It housed some of the most dangerous criminals and terrorists in the world history. One of the most dangerous men to be imprisoned in Alcatraz Island Prison was Al Scarface Capone. The prison is still known for its violent escape attempts, in fact may incidents of the nature have also been dramatized in Hollywood movies. The most famous of all escape attempts happened in May, 1946, it is termed as “Battle of Alcatraz”. It shut down in March, 1963, due to the heavy cost of maintenance of the prison and its deteriorating reputation.

This detention facility, which is very well known owing to its controversial existence, is based at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The prison mainly has prisoners from Afghan and Iraq war. It is a house for terrorists and enemy combatants. The notorious prison of Guantanamo Bay is worldwide known for the mental and physical torture it inflicts upon the prisoners. One thing that makes it different from other prisons on our list is that this facility is not administered by civilian authorities, but by the military instead.
