10. Camp 22, North Korea : Most Notorious and Brutal Prisons
The Camp 22 Prison in North Korea has been operational since 1965. It gained world attention in the year 2012 when its warden defected to china. This notorious Hoeryong Concentration Camp was basically an isolated prison meant to house political prisoners. The prison has a large compound that can accommodate 50, 000 prisoners. It is believed that three generations of dissident families have been imprisoned at Camp 22, North Korea, to completely root them out. Furthermore, the most shocking and tragic thing is that the death camp has used inmates as subjects for human experimentation. They are used as lab rats to test bomb or for biological weapons like anthrax. Apart from this, they face extreme torture.
9. Carandiru Prison, Brazil
The Carandiru Prison is Brazil was shut down in the year 2002 owing to the campaigns conducted by Amnesty International on human rights violation. In 46 years of its history, the prison faced a number of murders and killings of the inmates inside the prison. However, in 1992 the Carandiru Tragedy took place, when riots triggered the mass execution of inmates by the guards. Almost 1500 deaths occurred in its 46 years of history. Due to all these facts, we thought it deserved a spot on our list of ten most notorious and brutal prisons in the world.
8. Petak Island Prison, Russia
Petak Island Prison, situated in the center of a lake in the remotest place in Russia, is the next worst prison on our list of ten most notorious and brutal prisons in the world. Inmates are made to spend 22 hours a day in their cells and when they are out for two hours, they are allowed to do nothing else but labor. Visitors and parcels are allowed only twice a year. With such unpleasant conditions, it sure is one that deserves to be included on our list.
7. La Sante Prison, Paris, France
One of the reasons why we have La Sante Prison, based in Paris, France, on our list is due to a plain fact that the prison has been a home to many dangerous prisoners. To name a few, Carlos the Jackal and Manuel Noriega are some of those. Carlos is a notorious and very dangerous international terrorist, while Panamanian Dictator Manuel Noriega was charged on the human rights violation. France, as revealed by a research, has the highest prison suicide rate owing to the torture. At La Sante, the prisoners have 23-hours of lockdown a day and 100 degree of heat in the cell – which makes it clear why the suicide rate is so high. 6. Bang Kwang Prison, Bangkok
The next entry on our list of ten most notorious and brutal prisons in the world is that of the Bank Kwang Prison, which is located in Bangkok, Thailand. It is also referred to as the ‘Bangkok Hilton’. The inmates are tortured on routine basis and the cruelest ways are used to torture them – both psychologically and physically. The cells are very tiny and inmates are crammed into these tiny cells. If a prisoner is to be executive, he is given a short notice, just before a couple of hours before he is dragged to the execution place. Health and hygiene conditions are also known to be very poor.
