Painting is an art that has been in existence for several hundreds of years. It had been around at the time of Egyptians and even before that. This particular article address the most controversial painters over the course of history and while many people are aware of the paintings that have given rise to various different controversies, few painters are known in that respect expect of course the most famous Leonardo da Vinci. We decided to address that particular issue today and we hope this article proves informational.

10. Diego Velazquez Source
The first on our list of most controversial painters is Diego Velaquez was born in Seville in Spain on the 6th June of 1599. He died at the age of 61 on the 6th August of 1660 and was known for his controversial paintings. The most notable of his controversial works was the Rokeby Venus which he painted somewhere between 1644 to 1648. He was a part of Baroque movement. His birth name was Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez. Of all the artists in the court of King Philip IV, Diego was the most famous one and is considered as one of the more important painters of Spanish Golden Age.
9. Michelangelo Source
Michelangeo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on the 6th March of 1475 near Arezzo, in the Republic of Florence. He was an Italian painter, poet and sculptor of the High Renaissance. He was a major influence in the Western art and was notable for his most controversial work The Last Judgment including loads of other famous works. He was considered the greatest artist throughout the course of his lifetime. Other best works include Pieta and David. He died at the age of 88 on the 18th February of 1564.
8. Otto Dix Source
Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix was born on the 2nd December of 1891 in a place now known as Gera in Germany. He was known for his paintings and prinrmaking and received the Iron Cross Award for his works. He was considered as one of the more important artists of his time especially of the Neue Sachlichkeit. His most controversial work was a painting called The Trench Warfare which depicted the cruelties of a trench during war times. He died at the age of 77 on the 25th July of 1969.
7. Thomas Eakins Source
Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins was born on the 25th July of 1844 in Philadelphia. He was an American painter known for his realist paintings. His other passions included photography and sculpting and educating in the science of fine arts. His most controversial painting is The Gross Clinic which was painted in the year 1875. Another painting along the same theme was painted in the year 1889 and called The Agnew Clinic. He died at the age of 71 on the 25th June of 1916.
6. Salvador Dali Source
One of the most controversial painters of all time goes by the name Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali I Domenech, 1st Marques de Dali de Pubol, most commonly known as Salvador Dali. He was born on the 11th May of 1904 in Figueres. He was Spanish by nationality and was a major influence during the Renaissance. He was also passionate about photography and sculpting. The Enigma of William Tell is one of his most famous and controversial works which was completed in the year 1933. He died at the age of 84 on the 23rd January of 1989.
