It is the kind of book that disturbs you and at the same time reliefs you off the burden. A murder is investigated after 16 years of it taking place. This novel is considered by critics to be the Queen of Crime Fiction’s finest work. It has been regarded as the writer’s most accomplished work.
4. The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain
Our list of ten best crime novels would be incomplete if we do not talk about James M. Cain’s ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice’. James introduced a whole new genre with this amazing suspense/crime novel. The genre is referred to as the American Noir Fiction. The novel captures the rawness of humans; their life and their nature. It is full of hopelessness, greed, violence, as well as sex. But, one thing, that makes this novel stand apart, is the way he uses his maturity and experience to show how humanity is losing positivity in life. There are three main characters in the book – Frank, a tramp, who begins a love affair with a married woman; the married woman, named Cora; and Cora’s husband, Nick, who is violent and cruel. The first edition of the book was banned in Boston for being Violent and erotic.
3. The Girl with a Clock for a Heart by Peter Swanson
An extraordinarily brilliant and thrilling story by Peter Swanson, ‘The Girl with a Clock for a Heart’, is undoubtedly one of the best crime novels ever written. Peter tells a tale of a man who is highly obsessed with his college sweetheart, who breaks his heart long ago. Twenty years later, when George Foss sees her, he immediately forgives her for her past brutality. Liana Dector, is a fugitive, suspected for murder – she has her own reasons and motives to have come back into his life. The story is a remarkable thriller that you would enjoy at every step.

How can we not mention Stephen King’s Misery, while trawling through a list of ten best crime novels ever produced? This bloodcurdling thriller was later also developed into a motion picture, which gained equal attention and applause from viewers across the globe. It is based on a story of a novelist, Paul Sheldon, who following an incident runs into his biggest, rather craziest fan, Annie Wilkes. Annie Wilkes is unhappy with Sheldon’s latest writing, in which he has killed his character from a series of bestsellers, Misery Chastain. Annie imprisons Sheldon, tortures him so that he could bring Misery back to life. The setting is in a remote snow mountain area, which adds a unique flavor to the book. Obsessed with Sheldon and Misery, Annie goes to all lengths to make the novelist undo what he has written.
1. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee
To Kill a Mocking Bird is not only one of the ten best crime novels ever written but also a classic of modern American literature. The novel won Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was made a motion picture in the year 1962. The autobiographical element in the novel is well pronounced. The story is based on an event that occurred, near the writer’s hometown, when she was 10 years of age. The novel encapsulates rape crime and racial inequality as its major themes. The title, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ makes reference to the local belief that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. So, the author is convinced that the townspeople had the obligation to save Tom Robinson, but since they did not, they are the ones to be blamed for his death. She regards this as an unjust, immoral and sinful act.
